DVD Review - ATS® with Props: Veil, Fan, and Basket
By Tracey of TribalDiva Belly Dance Company (Christchurch)
This Instructional DVD is actually a 3 DVD set with a separate DVD focussing on each prop with the following FatChanceBellyDance® Sister Studios:
Each DVD follows a similar format with an introduction from the tutor, a performance from the featured group, then an instructional section followed by a drill session. For each prop there are breakdowns of 10 – 12 ATS® steps adjusted for the specific prop. These breakdowns are clear, easy to follow and demonstrated from all relevant angles so should be easy for the viewer to follow. The instructional sections include thorough information on prop options and choice, handling, posture and choice of music to complement the props.
The tutors discuss having kept the steps used as close to the original ATS® step as possible while allowing for the prop to be best displayed, and as an ATS® dancer it is easy to see the base steps and make the adjustments for each prop. This DVD does assume that the viewer is already familiar with the ATS® format, as although each step is broken down thoroughly and references are given to the original step on the FCBD® instructional videos there isn’t any instruction included about ATS® improvisational techniques. This DVD was made with the support of Carolena Nericcio (director of FatChanceBellyDance, creator of American Tribal Style® Belly Dance) – there is an intro from her on the DVD & she can be heard counting for the tutors during the instructional sections.
To fund the making of this DVD the tutors set up a Kickstarter project with a goal of raising US$6000 (which they achieved with 103 people pledging money to fund the project – a pledge of US$35 or more got backers a copy of the DVD, which considering that the DVD is currently on Amazon for US$44 is actually a pretty good deal!), behind the scenes updates & photos posted on the Kickstarter website:
Overall I think this DVD set is well made & good value – the TribalDiva Belly Dance Company dancers have already had fun adding these props to their repertoire!
